PORTSMOUTH, Rhode Island – Nothing beats a pain-free golf game. Dr. Misty Kosciusko, DC, MS, owner of New Horizon Chiropractic and Wellness, recently volunteered her expertise during the Newport County Chamber of Commerce 2012 Annual Golf Tournament instructing golfers on fitness, stretching, and wellness tips to improve their game.

Stationed at the first tee at Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth, Dr. Kosciusko provided samples of Biofreeze topical pain gel and assisted golfers on proper pre- and post-golf stretches. She explained to players the importance of "dynamic” versus "static" warm-up stretches.

“A dynamic stretch involves movement and momentum in a joint’s full plane of motion to propel the muscle into an extended range of motion, versus a static stretch which is holding the muscle in one elongated position,” said Dr. Kosciusko. “Dynamic stretching allows for increased blood flow, full joint range of motion, and flexibility of the muscle and fascia all at once. This helps to prevent injury and properly prepare the body for exercise.”

“Specific dynamic stretches most important for golf are leg and arm swings, side to side lateral bending, one-leg squats up and down, and trunk rotation,” said Dr. Kosciusko.

Dr. Kosciusko has extensive experience working with the golfing community. She was an exercise physiologist at Harmon Golf Club where she assisted pros at golf seminars with exercise prescription and training.

“I recall helping an individual who tweaked his knee on the golf course and was in pain,” said Dr. Kosciusko. “Happily, I was able to send them back to the game pain-free.”

New Horizon, located on East Main Road in Portsmouth, uses a whole-body approach and specializes in many treatment modalities with patients. Such treatments include but are not limited to chiropractic manipulative treatment –often called adjustments, custom fit “Sole Support” orthotics, physiotherapy, rehabilitation exercises, soft tissue treatment, and nutritional counseling including weight loss and detoxification programs.

The practice also offers a proven variety of “physicians only” nutritional supplements, including but not limited to the renowned Metagenics, as part of its weight loss and detoxification programs. Metagenics are scientifically formulated based on proprietary and published studies in nutrigenomics—how nutrition influences genetic expression for good health. Some of these supplements reduce inflammation and increase healing.
