More money for Caps and Gowns than for Prisons

South Kingstown --Today Independent challenger, Kevin O’Neill challenged the General Assembly to support a bill to provide needed public support to the University of Rhode Island from the state budget.

According to the State Board of Governors for Higher Education since “Since 2006-2007, when the state gave $182.3 million, its contribution to higher education has declined $40.4 million, or 23 percent. “

"These cuts are replaced by higher tuition, making higher education out of reach for our in-state students. The free spending at the State House must be brought under control so that we can adequately fund URI," said O’Neill. " One way to get moving in the right direction is to pass a bill that requires we provide more funding for the University of Rhode Island than we do our prisons -- and that is why I unequivocally support a bill requiring that we prioritize caps and gowns over prison uniforms," stated O'Neill.

"The time has come to reprioritize the budget, stop wasteful spending, and hold our elected Senators and Representatives accountable for their actions," said O’Neill. "For too long we have let the State House spend our money and run into debt, it is time to stand up and support a re-balancing of our budget priorities," stated O’Neill.

"The bottom line is that the State House will not change until new people with new ideas are elected," said O’Neill.

Kevin O’Neill is the Independent candidate for the 37th Senate District.
